“Marijuana” is out and “cannabis” is in. Using slang terms for cannabis promotes deep-seated stereotypes and stigmatization. During the 2017 legislative session, a law was passed that changed the language in all Hawaii Revised Statutes and Hawaii Administrative Rules from “marijuana” to “cannabis.”
Today, the Department of Health updated the language on its medical cannabis program website. Many thanks to DOH for promoting best practices. Call it by its name – not slang. Call it cannabis!
